A History of Cycling Advocacy

 Testimonials

Fine, okay, I get it—self-promotion. Gotta do it.

So here’s what people emailed and texted me about my book. You know I’m not making this up because I hate the me-me-me thing. But then again, it’s some really sweet stuff from people I love and admire.

I love the sense of dialogue and one person's views flowing into another. This is really well done.

Just writing to say I ordered your book, and am really enjoying it. I think it is important. I know many of the names in it, but I keep learning new things. I will continue to encourage those involved in advocating for cycling improvements to read it, as the history matters IMO.

What an immense accomplishment. It’s like a PHD thesis! It opened my eyes about the huge effort required to make changes in government policy and the dedication of so many individuals who care passionately about making a difference. I can see why biking can be such an important factor in promoting health and saving the environment. You have done a fantastic job in putting all this together. Congratulations. I am really proud of you.

Thank you for the book - what work must have gone into the editing and structuring. I did not expect the way the book was organized. You did an excellent job weaving the individual experiences and perspectives into a coherent and clear whole. I am just at the beginning of the book but I already got an excellent sense of people's lives, efforts, hopes and how coming together often results in the desired ends.

Colin, this is TERRIFIC!!!!! You have done a remarkable job, Dear!!!! This fucking ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

Very impressive. Just took a quick skim through and so much interesting stuff in there. And mind-boggling how you managed to weave it all together and keep it all people story based.

I started reading the book and I love it! It's nice to hear the stories told by the people themselves. It's so cool to read about some of the people that I've met over the years. Amazing how long some of them have been involved. What struck me too was how many people were participating in Vancouver already way in the beginning, even if it was just the rides of the "Bicycle People". And in Vancouver there were the very necessary champions at City Hall that really helped things along. Can't get much done without that. I'm finding it really exciting that there's so much happening right now, as a result of the many years of advocacy, first just in Vancouver, and in later years also in the outlying communities.

I just finished reading your book this weekend. I am totally in awe of how you managed to pull all those conversations into a cohesive story that flows so well and covers so much ground. I recall Arno talking about so many of the people in the book and it was great to finally "meet" them all. I have also noticed the sea change in the quality of cycling infrastructure around the city and some of the suburbs. You've done a fantastic job of documenting the herculean effort it took to get to where we are today. Thanks for your part in those efforts, as well as this magnificent book.
